ADAM SCOTT / FOUNDER, SCALE SUSTAIN

Creating the conditions for organisations to scale and sustain.

Scale Sustain value curve, rising from opportunity and experimentation towards scale and sustained value.

For more than 25 years, I’ve helped organisations scale and sustain through technology, information and organisational capability.

Artificial intelligence has changed that potential exponentially. I can show you how.

What does it mean to scale and sustain?

Scale is about creating and extending value. New products, services, projects, capabilities and growth.

Sustain is about keeping that value healthy, resilient and enduring. Ensuring the organisation has the practices, technology, information, governance and capability to continue delivering it.

That is the thinking behind Scale Sustain.

Artificial intelligence is a particular focus of my work today, but the underlying challenge is a familiar one: how organisations turn technological possibility into meaningful, lasting capability. That has been at the heart of my work for more than 25 years.

Find where AI can create real value

The important question is not where AI can be used, but where its use would make a meaningful difference.

The task is to identify where it can materially improve a process, decision, service, product or capability, and connect that improvement to outcomes that matter. That means separating interesting use cases from the ones worth pursuing.

Understand what AI really is

AI is easy to underestimate when it is experienced mainly through chatbots and copilots.

Leaders do not need to become technologists. They do need enough understanding to judge what is genuinely possible, what is hype and where the limits are. That understanding is what allows better decisions about where to act, what to avoid and what to explore further.

Look beyond chatbots

Individual productivity is useful, but it is only one expression of AI.

More significant value can emerge when AI changes workflows, automates parts of processes, supports decisions, connects information and changes how work gets done. That requires looking at the work itself, not just the tools people are using.

Use what your organisation already knows

AI brings enormous general capability. Your organisation brings context, experience, information, relationships and accumulated knowledge that generic AI does not have.

Bringing those together can make expertise more accessible, improve decisions and make scarce knowledge available to more people. The opportunity is to work out where the organisation already knows something valuable that AI could help people use more effectively.

Turn opportunity into an AI business plan

Identifying worthwhile opportunities is only the beginning. The next challenge is deciding which to pursue, in what order, and what the organisation must do to realise their value.

That means establishing what needs to be in place, how work may need to change, what risks need to be managed and how value will be measured. The plan should make clear what happens next.

Technology creates possibilities. Capability creates outcomes.

However impressive artificial intelligence is, technology alone will not deliver sustained value.

The organisation around it matters. How work gets done, how decisions are made, what information is available and whether people have the capability and confidence to use it well all shape the outcome.
